God, Ghosts, and Electromagnetic Fields

There are quite a few people who truly believe in ghosts: in 2005, a study published on  Science Direct estimated that 37% of Americans were deeply convinced of the real existence of haunted houses.

Research into Ghost Sightings

Numerous studies and neuropsychiatric research have followed since the 1980s to try and understand why some people believe they have seen—or do see—ghosts and specters.

A large part of paranormal experiences occurs in specific places that are associated with a perceived presence, a feeling of fear, strange odors, and sometimes auditory experiences or apparitions along the peripheral field of vision that "disappear" if looked at directly.

Physical Factors in Paranormal Experiences

Continuous measurements conducted within the locations identified by various studies—such as those collected by Dr. Richard Wiseman's team between Hampton Court Palace in London and the South Bridge vaults in Edinburgh—have linked paranormal episodes with certain physical characteristics of the environments, such as variations in the electromagnetic field and lighting levels [see the article "An investigation into alleged ‘hauntings’"," British Journal of Psychology, Dec. 2010].

The observations and monitoring revealed bursts of low-frequency magnetic fields, ultrasounds, and other physical anomalies that can directly influence objects within the space as well as the human brain.

As Silvano Fuso recalled in an old post on the CICAP blog, a second study conducted by Dr. Michael Persinger of Laurentian University in Ontario yielded results similar to those obtained by Dr. Wiseman in England:

"When we take measurements in houses where ghost sightings occur, at the place where the inhabitants sleep, we find high values of the magnetic field. A probable explanation is that ghosts are mainly induced by the direct effects of the stimulation of physical and natural events on the observer's brain."

Case Study and Further Findings

In an article published in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences del 2001, Persinger recounted the case of a couple, a young man and a woman, who reported waking up suddenly between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m. The man had seen an apparition of a figure moving in their bed. Both individuals had experienced strange sounds (a breath), marked apprehension, and a sense of a presence.

The continuous monitoring of their electronically dense house later revealed repeated variations of complex magnetic fields with peak intensities between 15 and 30 mG. Generated by suboptimal grounding of the house, these peaks coincided with reports of paranormal experiences.

Modern Technology and Paranormal Sensations

Due to the complexity of modern technology, the presence in the environment of resonant structures of magnetic fields that evoke these experiences may be more common than suspected.

Other studies have shown that large field variations are not necessary to generate these sensations: Dr. Paul Stevens of the Koestler Parapsychology Unit at the University of Edinburgh—who conducted measurements of magnetic fields at Persinger's experiment sites—noticed that electromagnetic field variations can be very small, about 100 times lower than those that one might experience sitting a meter away from a television.

According to Persinger: "When the forms of these magnetic fields are reproduced in the laboratory and exposed to the brains of volunteers, the sensation of perceiving strange presences develops..."

The application of electromagnetic fields to certain parts of the brain, such as the temporal lobes, can induce both physical and metaphysical sensations, like the feeling of proximity to God.

Previous Investigations and Conclusion

We have already talked about ghosts and electromagnetic fields [we refer to the related post which you can also read here]: in 2023, we went to a World War I bunker accompanied by a reliable SOMA ETHER model to capture traces of the ghosts of dead soldiers... What emerged was a very noisy piece selected by the Call Audiomanzia proposed by the Centro D'Arte and now part of ATLAS, our collection of electromagnetic geographies.

Have you ever listened to ATLAS?

You can only listen to it via radio on really special days...
