It's been almost a month since the first listen of ATLAS, our new work dedicated to electromagnetic soundscapes that can only be heard via radio/web radio.
In this blog post, we update you on the situation: do you want to know how our adventure is going? [If you have no idea what we're talking about, catch up on the missing information: read this post!].
How many radios have we contacted so fat?
We have approached 21 radios.
Only 1 web radio has responded to us.
We have also participated in 3 calls for works which resulted in 2 selections of our work.
We are truly sorry for not receiving even a single response from over 20 radios; we are not talking about large stations, but small radios and web radios that pride themselves on independence and experimentation... This total closure and lack of care is really sad.
Regarding the undeniable dominance of gigantic music streaming platforms as the only vehicle for spreading musical proposals: perhaps, other players in the supply chain – like independent radios – should start to reflect on their possible share of responsibility in the short-circuit we are experiencing... What do you think?
USMARADIO: the first streaming is unforgettable
Fortunately, we are not missing the attention of friends who are willing to help us, like Roberto Paci Dalò and Alessandro Renzi, along with the entire Usmaradio staff, who hosted the debut of our ATLAS on October 17th.
It was a truly exciting moment, concluded with a pleasant surprise: after ATLAS, the second episode of Under the Label, the broadcast by Andreij Rublev – aka  Andrea Gava – dedicated to underground, contemporary, and experimental music, aired, a real treat for the ears. Even for Andreij's broadcast, there are no archives or possibilities to re-listen outside of the live broadcast: you have to chase them, like in the good old days. The next episodes of Under the Label are scheduled for December 6th and 20th, tune in to Usmaradio at 9 pm CET.
Don't know USMARADIO????
It's the radio that gives voice to the activities of the University of San Marino and is dedicated to the production of experimental works, radio art, the relationships between radio and performing arts, and everything unusual for traditional radio – electroacoustic, soundscapes, research on the possibilities of voice and word. It is an international collaborative platform that broadcasts 24/7 worldwide.
Usmaradio was born to develop the practices of electroacoustic music studies of national radios from the past century and to spread the knowledge of radio, its history, techniques, and unexplored possibilities.
It is an open multidisciplinary community that encourages social networking and triggers collaborations locally and worldwide; it offers its spaces and technologies for research, production, and training purposes: it is a radio designed to fill the gap of educational spaces dedicated to radio culture.
Sonic Darts, the broadcast by Gwaith Sŵn on Resonance Radio
One of the two calls for works we participated in connected us with Gwaith Sŵn, a London-based collective of artists mainly active in sound research. The collective chose our piece "Calcite, Onyx Hawaii, Tobacco" to showcase the paths that can be taken to narrate the physicality of materials through sound.
The selected artists covered a range of materials, from ceramics to wood to metal to entire building structures. Each work employed creative methods to bring out the sonic complexity and latent musicality of physical materials.
All the listens revealed unusual approaches and introduced us to the work of truly intriguing and creative artists we were fortunate to hear for the first time thanks to Sonic Darts: Kevin Flanagan, Ben Gaunt, Eileen McLoughlin, Magda Lampropoulou, Mario van Horrik, Edward G. Ruchalski, Marco Marongiu, and Andrew Stones.
Radio Kapitał: one hour with L'Impero della Luce
Radio Kapitał was recommended to us by our esteemed Polish electronic musician friend: GałGał – perhaps you remember him from his participation in the second volume of the Lesder Session or, if you have a good memory and are our die-hard fans, you might have had the fortune to hear his set during one of our secret concerts at Lago Film Fest in 2022...
Radio Kapitał is a radio aligned with our adventurous spirit and every Friday hosts an hour of broadcast to promote the work of new artists.
Thanks to this web radio – which we highly recommend exploring, not only did we air ATLAS in its entirety, but we also dusted off our first album – Il Mare di Dirac, presented in two excerpts – and gave meaning to part of the field recordings we gather when traveling. At the heart of the broadcast, we proposed a collage created with environmental sounds captured at the Cathedral of San Giusto – Trieste, the Conservatory of Palermo, the Archaeological Museum of Trieste, and along the banks of the Piave River.
It was an hour of dense listening, and if you missed it, there might be good news for you in the future.
Syntonic: a deep listen in the world of NicoNote
Syntonic is a sound flow, a radio set that evolves never the same. A creation space where NicoNote offers multiple listens from which traces of her journey emerge, precious surprises in a free and surreal form, guests, collaborations, upcoming releases, and unpublished listens created specifically for Syntonic or drawn from her sound archives.
NicoNote has selected a track from the seven in ATLAS: Insula, the track made with sounds from our radio residency at Usmaradio, which you can listen to on Radio Raheem on November 20th at 10 pm.
We can't wait, and if you haven't yet listened to "Regola," Nico Note's latest – beautiful – work, you can catch up on lost time and hear it at this link.
